Create a fun, and trendy pair of faux feather earrings with this simple projects.
Here’s what you’ll need to make your own:
- Washi tape
- Artistic Wire 22 ga. Copper Wire 15 yd. Tinned
- Darice Jewelry Designer Tools & Jewelry Plier Set 5 pc
- Darice French Hook Earring Wires 1 in. 60 pc. Silver Plated
To begin, cut two pieces of wire about 1/2-inch longer than you want your finished feathers to be. Mine are about 2-inches long. About a 1/2-inch from one end of the wire, grab the wire with your round-nose pliers, and wrap the wire around the pliers to form a loop.
Wrap the tail around the base of the loop, pinching with the needle-nosed pliers, as needed to help you wrap, and trim the tiny tail that’s left with the wire cutters. Make loops on both pieces of wire, trimming the ends to make sure both wire pieces are still the same length when you’re done making the loops.
Cut a piece of washi tape that is twice as long as your wire (measuring from below the loop, to the end of the wire). Lay one of your wires down the middle of the tape, so the loop hangs just off the end of the tape.
Fold the other half of the piece of tape in half over the wire side, so the sticky sides are together, pressing flat to adhere, and smoothing the tape around the wire center.
Use your scissors to carefully cut a feather shape from your washi tape–your feather should begin as a pointed end by the loop, and taper outward into a larger, elongated, oval shape.
Next, use your scissors to cut a narrow fringe from the edge of your feather, angling upward from bottom to top, in towards the wire at the center. Do not cut all the way to the wire–leave a little uncut tape in the center to provide some stability.
Gently bend your feathers into as bit of an “s” curve, and separate the fringe a bit to make your feathers a bit more interesting.
Use your pliers to attach your feathers to earring wires using the top loops.
Try making feathers of different colors, sizes, lengths, and shapes, and try making earrings using more than one feather.
