Make some sweet baby bunnies out of yarn to celebrate the coming of spring.
Here’s what you’ll need to make your own:
- Yarn, I used medium weight.
- Two toilet tissue tubes, paper towel tubes, or 2 of the large, 8-oz. size bottles of craft paint.
- Dimensions Wool Felt.
- Darice Pom Poms 1 1/2 in. (38 mm) White 15 pc.
- PA Essentials Pom Poms 3/8 in. Pink 16 pc.
- Sewing needle.
- Black thread.
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks.
To begin, place your tubes or bottles next to each other, and begin wrapping the yarn around the middle. Keep the wraps tight, but not so tight that you won’t be able to slip the wrapped yarn off when you’re done. Wrap the yarn around the tubes/bottles 200 times, then cut the yarn.
Cut a 14-inch length of the same colored yarn, and tie it in one loose knot in the space between the two tubes/bottles, perpendicular to the wrapped pile.
Carefully slide the wraps off the ends of the tubes/bottles, and then pull the knot around the pile tight. Wrap the tie around the bundle again, and knot, cinching the bundle further. Wrap and knot again, tie a final square knot. Cut the looped ends of the bundle.
You should now have a fluffy pom-pom.
Trim the pom-pom into a more even shape.
To make the head, wrap one tube/bottle 150 times with yarn.
Carefully slide the wraps off. Turn the wrapped bundle on it’s side (so the holes are now on the sides), and carefully tie a piece of yarn around the middle of the whole bundle. Wrap and tie it a couple of more times, then tie a square knot to secure.
Cut the loops on the bundle, and then trim the pom-pom into a head shape.
Cut 2 ears out of the same colored felt, and inner ears out of a contrasting color. Glue the ears together.
Glue the head pom-pom to the body. Glue the ears to the head.
Use the needle and thread to sew the eyes to the head–push the needle through the head pom-pom from one side and pull to secure the knot, thread an eye bead on, and then push the needle back though the center of the head pom-pom to the other side, and add the other eye. Tie off the thread, and cut. Use your scissors to trim the yarn around the eyes, as needed.
Glue a triangle of felt on the head, or a pink pom-pom, for a nose. Glue a white pom-pom to the backside for a tail.
To make a little bit larger bunny, make two body pom-poms, and sew/glue them together. Depending on the weight of your yarn, you may have to wrap the yarn more or less times than I did to get the size of pom-poms you need.
