Christmas is just around the corner and it’s my favorite holiday to decorate for, so I decided to craft up a few extra decorations to add to my home this year. Though a little time consuming, these whimsical trees are pretty easy and fun to put together.
What You Need:
- Styrofoam Cones
- Felt Sheets (I used a lot to make my trees. You’ll probably want at least 3-5 sheets for each tree you make, depending on the size of the cones.)
- Dressmaker Pins
- Rotary Cutter (Or scissors if you have a steady hand)
- Cutting Mat
How to Make Them:
Cut your felt sheets into even strips. My smallest tree had strips that were 3/4 inch x 4 1/2 inch. My largest tree had 1 x 6 inch strips, and my middle tree had a combination of the two. You will need A LOT to cover your trees, so use up at least 5 sheets. Felt is pretty inexpensive, so make more than you think you’ll need.
You’ll also want to cut a piece of felt in an arch shape. It doesn’t have to be perfect, you just don’t want the styrofoam peeking through the base of your tree. The arch shape will wrap around the bottom of the cone, so make it long enough to cover the full circumference.
Wrap your arch around the cone, making sure the bottom 1/2 – 1 inch is covered. Nothing else really has to be perfect. My felt actually just stuck to the styrofoam pretty well, so I didn’t need to pin or glue the felt at all to keep it in place before my next step.
Fold your Felt loop in half and pin it to the styrofoam so that the fold barely grazes the bottom of the cone.
Continue around the base of the cone.
With your next layer, pin the loop so that it covers the space between the loops below and continue around the cone. Keep looping and pinning all the way up the cone.
Once you have less than 1 inch visible of the styrofoam, instead of looping your strip, pin it about 1/4 of the way down.
Then, loop the other 3/4 of it up and over the top of the cone, pin it down. Continue all the way around the top of the cone.
Finally, make a circle with your strip as shown.
Pin the circle to the very top.
You’re ready to show off your new homemade decoration!
