I love the look of mercury glass. It’s perfect in almost every style of decor or season. It can be simple, elegant, romantic or modern depending entirely on what you do with it. It has only one problem. It can be prohibitively expensive. But not anymore. Turn any old glass jar into dazzling faux mercury glass with two simple ingredients (hint, one of them is water!)

Here’s what you’ll need:

Glass jars, vases or bowls

Water

Mirror spray paint

1. Lightly mist the inside of your glass. If you have a wide mouth jar or a bowl, you may want to tape off the outside.

2. Spray a thin coat of Mirror paint into the inside of the jar or bottle. Allow the paint to drip down and coat the inside, you want the coat to be uneven.

3. Allow the paint to dry and then repeat until you have the level of mirror finish that you desire (2-3 coats is usually sufficient).

You can also use this technique on the outside of a jar candle to create a Mercury Glass Candle.

Look at these fancy clothes pins! We wanted to start off with a little, fun DIY project.

Or if you prefer cut a piece of ribbon that will cover the clothes pin. Then just hot glue the paper or ribbon right onto the clothes pin.

To embellish you can either make a bow out of ribbon or a rosette out of paper. (DIY, instructions here) Add a little crystal in the center and your ready to glue it on to the top of the open end of the clothes pin.

So easy right! These are just really cute to be used so many different ways. You can use them to hang a letter garland at a birthday party, or use them to hang photos on a clothes line at a shower or party! You can even just use them to clip a baggie closed, or put glue a magnet on the back and you can use it as a clip on your fridge. These would be really cute to add to a “house-warming” gift basket as well!

<fb:share-button href="http://thinkcrafts.com/blog/2011/07/17/pretty-personalized-baby-canvas/" type="box_count"></fb:share-button>
By Guest Blogger Vicky, from the blog “Alpha Design”.

In January this year I was overjoyed when my niece gave birth to a little baby girl. There was a rush within the family to buy presents for this new addition and I saw many of them giving things like clothes and toys but I wanted to do do something a bit different. Something that marked her birth and would be a keepsake for her in years to come. So, I decided that I would paint her a canvas with her name and birth date on it.

I looked online for ideas and after much deliberation I decided that I would use an owl theme. I know from my card making that Owls are very on trend at the moment and so this seemed like a good choice. I created a mental picture of what I wanted it to look like and went out to a local craft shop to buy a canvas. I got a small square canvas and then I went to my local DIY store where I bought a number of paint tester pots. Acrylic paints soon add up in price and so this seemed like a great way to save some cash.

After all of this, I armed myself with a paintbrush and just went for it. I had only previously painted two canvases before this and so this seemed like quite a big task of myself. Eventually (after a few weeks of hard work!) I finished my picture. I used raised paints that come in a nozzled tube to add the writing and the rest of the picture is just done with my tester pots. I added the buttons on as eyes to make it a little more 3dimensional and interesting.

I hope to do much more painting as I really enjoyed the whole experience. Here are a couple of things I learned along the way:

It is best to draw out the picture you see in your head and keep it next to you the whole time. I also kept a few example pictures that I found on the internet with me too.

If you are going to mix your own colors then make sure that you have more than enough. There were a couple of times when I got into a bit of a panic because I thought that the color I had mixed would run out!

Have a break in order to refocus. After sitting for a few hours you can get quite tired and a bit bleary eyed. I found that I painted much better when I had regular breaks and a chocolate biscuit!

Practice writing in paint on a piece of paper first so that you get it right on the canvas!

My niece really liked the unique present and it will look great on her pink bedroom wall!

As much as I love candles, I can never find a candle holder I like. I purchased a clear square one, but it just looked plain sitting on top of my table. The pages I saved from a broken book seemed like they would look beautiful while illuminated with light, so I thought the two would fit perfectly together. It takes a small amount of time to make, but it gave me exactly the type of candle holder I was looking for.

What you need:

Candle holder

Candle

Scissors

Book pages

Mod Podge Hard Coat

Step 1. Trim the edges of the book pages so only the block of words remain. The number of pages you’ll need depends on the amount of words on each page and the size of the candle holder. Cut the pages into thin strips, then cut them into thirds.

Step 2. Remove any price stickers from the candle holder, wash it thoroughly, then let it dry.

Step 3. Put a layer of Mod Podge on the sides of the candle holder, then start placing down the paper strips. Overlap some of the pieces to create a textured look, but try to keep the layers as thin as possible so the light shines through. As you overlap the strips, put Mod Podge in between the pieces so they don’t bubble. Don’t worry if some stick out over the edge, you can trim them later.

Step 4. After you have the sides of the candle holder covered with the strips, apply a layer of Mod Podge over them. Use your finger to apply it so you can flatten out the pieces as you go along.

Step 5. When you’re finished with the sides, flip the candle holder over and use the Mod Podge to apply strips to the bottom, then put another layer on top to seal them on.

Step 6. Leave the candle holder upside down, let it dry thoroughly, then trim the excess strips on the edges. If there’s any rough edges, use your finger to apply Mod Podge to smooth them out, then let it dry before using.

Pin blue ribbon around the outside edge of three larger stars and use as the base for the cubes.

<fb:share-button href="http://thinkcrafts.com/blog/2011/05/24/altered-paper/" type="box_count"></fb:share-button>
By Recycled Crafts Contributor, Anitra from the blog “Coffee Pot People”.

I love paper. All kinds of paper—handmade, manufactured, striped, floral, plaid, plain. Okay, that last one maybe not as much as the printed varieties. The solid-color sheets from the scrapbooking pads I buy tend to accumulate, while I use up their more interesting siblings.

So I decided to try altering them into something more interesting.

One of my favorite methods results in paper that has a leather-like texture. It makes a great background for collage, and is a lot easier to glue than actual leather, not to mention considerably less expensive.

To get your leather-textured paper, take a sheet of whatever color you like, and hold it under the sink tap until it’s evenly wet, but not soggy. Now wad it up, gently but thoroughly. After you’ve got it crumpled into a tight ball, carefully unwad it. Wet paper is fragile, so easy does it, or you’ll put a finger through it.

When the paper is unwadded and spread out flat, you can iron it. Use a fairly hot iron, and put a clean, dry sheet of paper over your wrinkled up wet one, or the iron may stick and/or take off some of the color. You now have a sheet of paper that has a wrinkled look, but is flat. Lay it out to dry completely. (My favorite place is on top of the dryer while I’m drying a load of clothes.)

You’ll notice your “new” paper has more than wrinkles; it will now have a heavier, thicker feel to it, as well.

Another way I alter paper is to spritz it with another color. Dip an old toothbrush into a small puddle of paint, and run your finger over the bristles, flicking paint in a spray over the surface of the paper.

If you want the paint to spread a bit, do an additional spritz with water. You can see a few puddles on my sheet, here. If that happens on yours, gently lay a paper towel over it. Don’t press down on it; just let it soak up the excess on its own.

I’ve used purple on lavender here, but white on black would be another choice, or blue on green. Any color combination you want is as close as your paint stash.

As with your “leather” paper, lay flat to dry.

And here’s one using several colors. I think it has distinct possibilities!

And here’s one way I used my finished paper:

The warm weather always means a big upswing in the appearance of iced drinks around our house, and with them, an upswing in the need for coasters. This year I’ve ditched the plain jane ones I’ve had for a while and instead my tables are decked out with some custom stamped tile pretties.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

Plain white tiles (4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″)

1. Cut squares of paper using the decorative edging scissors 1/2 inch smaller than the tiles.

2. Stamp your images in the center of the paper.

3. Apply a thin coat of Modge Podge to the surface of the tile and smooth the squares of paper in place. Allow the tiles to dry before proceeding.

4. Apply a thin coat of Modge Podge over the paper, work out any bubbles and apply a second coat when the first is dry.

5. Spray the top side of the tiles with two to three thin coats of glaze spray, allowing each layer to dry before applying the next.

6. Once all coats are dry, cut squares of felt that are just barley smaller than the tiles and glue them to the underside of the tiles to protect your tabletop.

I have one of those kids who is both sporty and crafty, which makes this kit just about the coolest thing you can give him on a Saturday afternoon. A true, working skateboard (24 inches long) this skateboard is plain, unfinished wood, ready for your child to add their own design, which means that you don’t have to have a skull and crossbones skateboard (unless you want to, that is!)

The kit comes complete with skateboard, paint, brushes and peel and stick cuttable grip paper. You can choose to paint just the underside of the skateboard as traditional skateboard generally are or paint both top and bottom and add the grip paper in sections. The kit doesn’t come with any kind of sealant so if you think your skateboard might get left out in the elements, you may want to give it a coat of polyurethane before adding the grip paper, but otherwise, you have everything you need, right out of the box.

This kit was a huge hit on a sunny Saturday at our house and I’m sure it would be at yours as well! Give it a try and send them out for a spin (with appropriate protective gear, of course!)

Wine charms are a very popular accessory for get togethers. Charms help people keep tabs on their drink. Here is a cute idea for coffee charms. Coffee charms can be used for groups of people who get together and drink coffee!

Here is how I made these.

1) Went online and Googled “Coffee Puns” to get some cute saying for my coffee charms, and printed them out on cardstock.

2) Glued the coffee sayings on miniture tiles.

3 ) I Found a few coffee beans/grounds from the coffee stash in the kitchen.

4) Purchased a few packs of “Hoop earrings”.

5) Hot glued everything together to make the Coffee charms!

6) Decorated some finishing touches with puffy paint.

7) Here you go! Coffee Charms!

These were Really fun to make! I cannot wait to make more sets of these to gift to family members and friends!!

<fb:share-button href="http://thinkcrafts.com/blog/2011/04/20/dye-free-easter-eggs/" type="box_count"></fb:share-button>
By Crafts-a lot Contributor, Mable who is an avid reader of craft blogs & magazines and has aspirations to improve her crafting skills.

Have you decorated your Easter eggs yet? I found an article by Parents Magazines and they share some creative ideas on how to decorate your Easter eggs without using traditional dye.

One of my favorite ideas was adding Thicker Foam Stickers to spell out seasonal phrases on eggs, or plastic eggs. You could use this idea for directions for your Easter egg hunt, or just write “Happy Easter” as a centerpiece.

Shared by Tara Donne

You can also raid your crafting stash for special egg décor. Use any all-purpose glues to add buttons, sequins, ribbons, gems, rhinestones, or flowers. Parents Magazine suggested CreateForLess as a supplier of colorful buttons and craft glue.

Read the article here!

Newspapers

Instructions

1. Apply texture. Cover work surface with newspapers. Insert craft picks into bottom end of each egg. (Note: after texturing each egg, insert into Styrofoam block to dry.) According to manufacturer’s instructions, apply each texture to one egg in each of the three sizes of eggs as follows:

For stucco eggs: Use knife to apply one coat onto three eggs, moving knife back and forth to create stripes.

For crackle eggs: Brush primer – sealer onto three eggs. Let dry. Use knife to apply smooth coat of crackle texture to eggs, like flat-frosting a cake. (Note: the thicker the application, the larger the cracks, the thinner the application, the finer the cracks.)

For thick texture eggs: Use knife to apply one coat onto three eggs, moving knife on and off egg to create bumpy texture.

For glass texture eggs: Use brush to apply two smooth coats of glass texture onto three eggs. Let dry between coats.

2. Paint eggs. Spray stucco texture eggs stripes of Copper and Brilliant Silver, allowing colors to slightly run together. Return eggs to Styrofoam block to dry. Spray crackle eggs Antique Gold. Spray thick texture eggs Copper. Spray gloss texture eggs Brilliant Silver.

3. Attach accents and ribbon. Remove adhesive dot from filigree accents and discard. Thread 8″ ribbon length through filigree accent. (Tip: For ease in putting ribbon through filigree accent, fold 6″ wire length in half. Place center of ribbon length into folded end of wire. Thread cut ends of wire through hole – similar to using a needle and thread.) Remove wire and trim ribbon ends at bottom of filigree accent. Use glue gun to attach to top of egg. For bottom filigree accent, repeat, using 6″ ribbon length. Cut bottom loop with scissors so that four cut ends of ribbon extend out. Hot glue to bottom of egg.

4. Embellish eggs. Attach jewels into three cluster formations on silver eggs and randomly attach jewels to striped silver and copper eggs . Hang eggs onto wire tree. Place gold paper shreds at base of tree. (Note: If gold shreds unavailable, spray natural kraft color shreds with Antique Gold.)

A few final thoughts: This was a fun and simple project that only took about an hour. You could just use gold colored clay, but I like the look of the paint. I’m already brainstorming my next project, a ring…

You can create fine art at a small price using STYROFOAM Brand Foam and Duct Tape. This project is from FloraCraft “Make It: Fun”.

Supplies

STYROFOAM Brand Foam:

Three – Sheets: 18″x12″ x 1″

Colored Duct Tape:

White

Black

Red

Blue

Yellow

Tools:

FloraCraft Foam Cutter or Serrated Knife
Low-Temp Glue Gun
Scissors
Black Marker
Ruler

Use strips of white tape to completely cover the front and sides of two of the 18×12″ sheets, slightly overlapping each strip.

To create the three dimensional lines use the ruler and black marker to measure and draw out four 2″x18″ pieces onto the last sheet. Use the foam cutter or serrated knife to cut the pieces from the sheet. There will be a 4″x18″ piece left. Measure and draw out three 4″x4″ squares and one 4″x6″ rectangle and cut them apart.

Wrap the four 2″x18″ pieces with black duct tape. Wrap two of the 4″x4″ squares and the rectangle with red duct tape. Wrap the last 4″x4″ square with yellow duct tape. Then, wrap the 4″x6″ rectangle with blue duct tape.

Glue the two white sheets together side by side with the left side 3 ½” higher than the right. Glue the dimensional black lines on first using the image as a guide. Now glue on the colored squares and the rectangle. Place the colored pieces as shown or create your own design.

Cut strips of black tape in half lengthwise and use them to outline the colored pieces as shown to create the geometric designs on the white. Once you are happy with the black line design you can go back and select squares or rectangles to fill in with color.

<fb:share-button href="http://thinkcrafts.com/blog/2011/03/02/earrings-earrings-earrings/" type="box_count"></fb:share-button>
By Crafts-a lot Contributor, Mable who is an avid reader of craft blogs & magazines and has aspirations to improve her crafting skills.

I’m a jeans and T-shirt kind of person, but I have to wear earrings when I leave the house. Since I pick out earrings 365 times a year, I have a lot of earrings. Case in point, my earring rack:

This earring rack was made about a year ago, and is much fuller now. It was easy too. I had my Dad make a frame out of extra trim, and some wire mesh. These measures 2 ft by 3 ft, and is held together with lots of wood glue and staples. We just aligned the corners and used lots of glue and staples to hold them together.

I spray painted the frame black and used a staple gun to attach the mesh on the back. Depending on how you want to hang yours, and where, add a wire across the back and hang with a sturdy nail. Also adding S hooks works awesome for your rings and necklaces!

Add your earrings! My advice: make sure to make yours large enough so you can have room to fill it up.

These little cups make a great “Just Because” gift and are also a quirky way to mark different cups for different family members (and save on washing!) and are deceptively simple to make. Look for paint that is specifically made for porcelain and be sure to follow all of the manufacturers directions when it comes to surface prep to avoid the paint chipping off.

Here’s what you’ll need:

Set of porcelain or stoneware cups, white or light in color

Porcelain paint and clear coat

Star chart

Toothpicks to skewers

Pencil

1. Look up the constellation that corresponds to the zodiac sign for each of your family members.

2. Transfer each set of “stars” to the side of each cup with the pencil. Print the name or initials of the owner on the cup as well if you want.

3. Choose a color for each cup and, using the toothpick, dip the pointy end into the paint (you may want to try this out on a piece of scratch paper first) apply evenly sized dots to each “star”.

4. Using very small dots (and keeping them close together) follow the lines of the letters of the name or initials.

5. Allow the paint to dry and then coat with clear coat to protect the surface. Let the paint cure according to the manufacturers directions before using.

Which sometimes means embellishing things that were once her brothers (and not pink) to make them more to her taste. Such as this bike helmet. Once covered in blue alien plastic, it has waited in the basement for her for a few years. When I brought it out, however, her nose wrinkled at the sight of it. It DID NOT go with her pink skates, pink tutu or pink shirt. But instead of heading out to buy a pink helmet or trying to convince her to just go with the aliens, I got a little creative.

My daughter is all about pink and girly. And while it’s easy to find a lot of pink and girly things out there to buy, we try, as best we can, to work with what we have.
Most children’s helmets have a simple plastic shell to add decoration that can be popped off with a little effort, revealing a plain black foam base underneath. If you don’t have a die cutter, look for precut shapes in patterns that you like, or hand cut images to personalize your child’s helmet (spelling out their name would be cute!)

Here’s what you need:

Bike helmet
Die cut shapes of lightweight scrapbook paper
Modge Podge Hard coat

1. Remove the plastic shell from your helmet.

2. Working on one area at a time, apply a thin coat of Modge Podge to the surface of the helmet and smooth on your shapes. You can create patterns, overlap shapes or just keep it simple with a few images. Check for any wrinkles and bubbles and smooth out and then allow that area to dry while you work on another area.

3. Coat the entire surface with a thin coat of Modge Podge to seal the paper and create a uniform smoothness on the helmet.

4. Once the helmet is dry, spray with a coat of polyurethane to help create a more rainproof barrier over your helmet.

5. Allow the helmet to dry before using.

If you look around your house, chances are there's something around that has an interesting print or pattern just waiting to be used to add texture to a clay project like this. These little hearts are a great way to pass on some Valentines love to those around you or just add a little February cheer to your house. While you can use small cookie cutters, free hand cutting makes these hearts a little more fun and funky.

If you look around your house, chances are there’s something around that has an interesting print or pattern just waiting to be used to add texture to a clay project like this. These little hearts are a great way to pass on some Valentines love to those around you or just add a little February cheer to your house. While you can use small cookie cutters, free hand cutting makes these hearts a little more fun and funky.

Here’s what you’ll need

Red and white polymer clay

Butter knife

Something with texture

Skewer

Ribbon

Clear gloss spray

1. Work your clay until it is soft and pliable and then press into a long flat oval. You can roll out with a rolling pin but just flattening with your hands works just as well.

2. Laying the clay flat on a work surface and roll or press your textured object across it to create a print on the clay. Here we used the top part of a vase but the soles of shoes, bottom of baskets or even buttons and beads can make an interesting pattern for your hearts. Using your skewer, pierce a hole in the center top part of the heart.

3. Cut out roughly 1 inch by 1 inch hearts. Bake according to the package directions.

4. Once the hearts are cooled, spray with a thin coat of clear gloss and allow it to dry.

5. Thread each heart onto a length of ribbon and tie, trimming the ends to the length you desire.

<fb:share-button href="http://thinkcrafts.com/blog/2011/02/09/romantic-candy-dish/" type="box_count"></fb:share-button>
By Recycled Crafts Contributor, Anitra from the blog “Coffee Pot People”.

Valentine’s Day is nearly here, heralded by everything frou-frou and sweet. Let’s play on that and create a romantic candy dish!

You won’t need much to make one:

an old martini or wine goblet

sheet music (Old piano books are good for this.)

bits of ribbon and trim

a piece or two of old jewelry

a tiny silk flower or two

decoupage medium, or other glue that dries clear

Prepare the martini glass by cleaning it to remove any grease or fingerprints. Cut your sheet music into small pieces, looking for titles that strike a romantic note. (I found one that said ‘Prankish’, and another with the sub-title, ‘Not too fast, and even-tempered’.)

Use the decoupage medium or glue to layer the music all over the outside of the martini glass’ bowl, overlapping to cover it entirely. Don’t worry if you have pieces and corners extending over the edge, because…

When the music paper is dry, trim close to the edge.

Trim the upper and lower edges with pretty braid or ribbon. At the top of the stem, tie a bow with narrow ribbon, and glue a tiny flower or two to the knot.

Where the ends of your braid come together on the top edge, glue bits of old jewely to decorate.

Fill with candy, and enjoy!
