By General Crafts Contributor Mina, from the blog Mina’s Journal.

Make these wee night light lanterns for the wee ones you know to help settle them to sleep, or to set a mood!

Craft Materials:

Small boxes – lightbulbs or food packaging for example

Marker or pencil

Craft knife

Cellophane or clear plastic

White glue

LED lights

Craft Paint

How to Make the Night light Lanterns

Carefully pull the the packaging apart, so it is still in one piece, but will lie flat.

Draw your designs onto the packaging. I used the inside of the box so the paint would cover better.

Simple shapes are cool. You can see here I’ve used hearts, stars and small square and rectangle shapes like a building at night time.

Cut your designs with the craft knife and paint the surface of the box.

Cut cellophane to cover the cut out spaces and glue to the inside of the box.

Note about Lining the Boxes

For large designs, the spaces look better if they are lined with something like cellophane. For small designs, there is no need to line the boxes.

You could line the window spaces with colored cellophane. Bend the existing folds of the box the opposite way than they were intended, so your box will keep its shape. Glue the side edges together. Fold the ends of the box back in.

Pop your lights in when you are ready!

A Note about LED Lights

The LED lights I used here are childrens’ finger laser lights. They are safe, small and have a switch – all enclosed in plastic housing. They are cheap – there are four in the set I got in colors white, blue, red and green.

Ideas for the Night light Lanterns

For little ones:

Stack on top of each other for buildings.

Change the nightlight Lanterns and / or the colored lights around each night as a pre-sleep activity.

There are more sophisticated uses for these things for grown ups.

Set the scene for romantic dinners

Use in the bathroom to have your bath with (Don’t forget the bubble bath!)

Use in ‘your space’ for quiet contemplation or relaxation

Have fun with these and create your own ambiance! Happy crafting!

Whether you’re serving hard-boiled eggs for a party or you’re painting eggs for Easter, using an egg holder is the best way to keep the egg displayed beautifully without it rolling around all over the table. It’s incredibly easy to make and you can decorate it any way you wish, including personalizing it with someone’s name. All you’ll need is a few supplies to put the project together.

What you’ll need:

Cardstock

Scissors

Large embellishment

Egg

Glitter glue

Mod Podge or double-sided tape

Step 1. Cut the cardstock into a strip that’s large enough to hold the egg. Depending on your preference, you can make it tall and thin so the egg balances on top or short and wide so it holds a larger portion of the egg. Use the egg as a measuring device.

Step 2. Glue the ends of the strip together so it creates a large loop.

Step 3. Place a large embellishment on the front of the loop. Use Mod Podge or double-sided tape to secure it if it’s not self-adhesive.

Step 4. Use glitter glue to make dots all over the holder. The best way to pull it off without smearing the glue is to hold the loop in between your fingers with your thumb on the embellishment and pointer finger on the inside of the loop.

Step 5. Give it plenty of time to dry before placing the egg in the holder.

I knit and weave, so I have many opportunities to use all the pretty yarns out there. My daughter on the other hand, is too little to want to learn to knit and has no interest in weaving, but wants to make things with all the pretty yarns. The project I came up with was simple yarn art paintings. This type of painting is based on the traditional folk art of the Huichol Indians of Mexico. The traditional way of producing this type of art is taking bees wax and melting it on a wooden board, then pressing the yarn into the wax before it hardens. We are going to use glue and cardstock.

Supplies:

Yarn
Cardstock
Glue
Pencil

First I came up with our design idea. We thought the chickadee type bird would look cute in her home room, replacing some of the baby art – since now she’s a big girl. I sketched a simple outline in light pencil on a piece of heavy cardstock. We gathered the colors of yarns we wanted, a couple of toothpicks and glue.

The pink bird was my daughter’s. I started her bird by laying a thin single bead of glue around the outside line of the sketch. She placed a length of yarn on the glue following the path. Then right next to that I placed another line of glue. This technique worked for her because there is not a large area of glue for her to get her arm in and there is a short length of yarn to deal with so it does not get tangled. We continued to work in this fashion until we got to the center. We placed the eye on top of the pink yarn, not traditional but again, it worked for the younger artist.

The blue bird, I started with the wing and eye in the darker color. I spread a layer of glue on the wing area and started to lay the yarn. On the wing, I started with a spiral then back and forth working toward the tip of the wing. The eye was a spiral starting in the center and working out until it was the size I wanted. For the lighter blue, I started in the center by the wing working out. I used the toothpick for making the hard corners and pressing the yarn down, since I tend to get extra gluey fingers. I liked the idea of using one long piece of yarn, winding it around to create texture and shapes, but if it’s easier to use a shorter piece of yarn that is fine too.

Both of these approaches worked really well since we were not covering the entire piece of cardstock. If the design calls for the entire piece to be covered I suggest working from left to right, placing glue only on the section that is being worked on, then when it’s covered contiue by adding more glue to another section.

When the glue was dry, I placed them in frames and hung them in the little one’s room.

This is a great project to use up bits of yarn and yarns that are beautiful but you don’t want to wear. Also, a project if you love yarn but do not knit, crochet or weave. Create your own folk art piece today.

By General Crafts Contributor Mina, from the blog Mina’s Journal.

Make these cardboard tube holders for your pens and pencils to organize your craft area or funky up your desk. An easy ‘rainy day’ activity or for when the kids say they are ‘bored’. Most houses will have the basic materials at hand.

These were made with help from a wee guy who just turned four. He had a lot of fun deciding what colors the arms and feet should be, applying the paint with a sponge and loves to stack them like a totem pole. Maybe I’ll make up some tribal tubes for just that purpose. His two year old brother likes to put them in different orders, sometimes color, sometimes according to the shapes on them. (I haven’t quite worked out his logic!)

Craft Supplies

cardboard tubes

card for the arms

acrylic paints

thick black marker

wiggly eyes

white glue

craft knife

scissors

Craft Technique

Base coat the cardboard tubes. I used cut pieces of kitchen sponge. It provides a quick and even coverage.

Decorate the tubes with a marker. Use simple shapes like stars, swirls, dots, stripes.

Glue on the eyes. Add faces. A few well placed lines to show expression is all you need.

Cut out base from card and glue to the bottom of the cardboard tube. You can download some base shapes to use.

Download Feet Template

Or download plain shapes to use as a template. Resize them if you need to.

Download Plain Feet Template

Cut a rectangle from matching card for the arms. Make a slot in each side of the Pen Pal with a craft knife to place the arms through. Bend the middle of the arms to the inside of the cardboard tube to make more room inside the tube.

Add pens to your pals, and you’re done.

Easy Craft Ideas

Further embellish with ribbon or yarn bows for shoe laces

Use glitter glue to add some sparkle to your drawn designs

For small children, let them put stickers on the cardboard tubes instead of painting them

Draw eyes instead

Have fun and Happy Crafting!

There’s something incredibly boring about a refrigerator unless it’s decorated. Some bright color and sparkle can do wonders for brightening up the fridge and the kitchen. A cost-efficient way to do this without going overboard is to combine glitter magnets with bright paper for note taking. All you need is a few items in order to put together a set to use at your home or to give as a gift.

What you’ll need:

Bright paper or cardstock

Step 1. Choose the glitter you’d like to use and put one small pile of each on different sheets of wax paper so the colors don’t mix.

Step 2. Remove the paper backing off the magnets and press each one adhesive side down into a pile of glitter.

Step 3. Shake off the loose glitter, then place each finished magnet on a single piece of wax paper.

Step 4. Hold spray glue at least a foot away from each magnet, then spray them in short spurts so it doesn’t knock the glitter off. Let it sit to dry and, if necessary, put more glitter on and spray it again with the glue. Give the glue time to dry before putting the magnets on the fridge.

Step 5. Cut the paper to whatever size you’d like to use, then place it on the fridge along with the magnets.

By Guest Blogger, from the blog Serenity’s Musings.

Here’s something you could DIY as a Gift for anyone.

Material Needed:

Fabric Paint

A brush for painting ( I used a fine tipped brush)

A T-shirt

Cup of water for washing brush between colors

Time: About 20 minutes

Difficulty Level :Easy

Step 1: Place a sheet of paper or book inside the T shirt right beneath where you wish to draw. This helps prevent seeping of colors.

Step 2: Start with white paint. You can always add other colors on top of white, this gives a purer color. Or you could leave it as white.

Step 3: Draw freehand swirls and curved lines. Or you could try for straight lines, but these are harder to do at the start.

Step 4: Wash your brush. Best to paint on a piece of paper or tissue to get rid of excess water.

Step 5: Choose a darker color similar to the T shirt color. I chose red.

Step 6: Paint some swirls or dots in red.

Inverted colors of the original for a different color combination.

Reminder:

Iron on reverse before washing.

I have used normal detergents and washed in normal machine wash(cold water) and the colors seem to last for quite a while.

For best colors, apply more than one coat of acrylic/fabric paint.

Make yourself a Postbox to stash your change in! When I was small, Wednesday was banking day at school. You took your wee passbook and banking money. The saying on the passbook was something like:

Save your pennies, they grow into dollars!

Great advice and still valid for today.

These cute Postboxes are quick and easy to make.

Craft Supplies:

cardboard tube

black marker

red and black paint

craft knife

white glue

foam supermarket tray or thick cardboard

a bead for each postbox

How to make the Postbox

Draw your design on the cardboard tube with the black marker.

Paint the bottom in black and the rest in red. You might want to leave a space for a message or your name. Something like: ‘Darcy’s Money Box’. You might want to put a message on like: ‘Don’t Touch’, or ‘Christmas Fund’ or something else.

Draw around the end of the cardboard tube onto cardboard or foam supermarket tray. Cut out two circles just a little larger than your circles to make the base and top of the Postbox.

Stick a bead onto the top of one of the circles to make the top of the Postbox.

Get an adult to cut out the money slot with the craft knife.

You’re done! Now put your post your change in them!

Ideas for the Postboxes

Messages to write in the blank space of the Postbox could be:

Have some cents!

I have cents!

Let’s be cents-able!

I love the look of mercury glass. It’s perfect in almost every style of decor or season. It can be simple, elegant, romantic or modern depending entirely on what you do with it. It has only one problem. It can be prohibitively expensive. But not anymore. Turn any old glass jar into dazzling faux mercury glass with two simple ingredients (hint, one of them is water!)

Here’s what you’ll need:

Glass jars, vases or bowls

Water

Mirror spray paint

1. Lightly mist the inside of your glass. If you have a wide mouth jar or a bowl, you may want to tape off the outside.

2. Spray a thin coat of Mirror paint into the inside of the jar or bottle. Allow the paint to drip down and coat the inside, you want the coat to be uneven.

3. Allow the paint to dry and then repeat until you have the level of mirror finish that you desire (2-3 coats is usually sufficient).

You can also use this technique on the outside of a jar candle to create a Mercury Glass Candle.

Look at these fancy clothes pins! We wanted to start off with a little, fun DIY project.

Just trace the size of the clothes pin onto your decorative paper and cut it out. Or if you prefer cut a piece of ribbon that will cover the clothes pin. Then just hot glue the paper or ribbon right onto the clothes pin.

To embellish you can either make a bow out of ribbon or a rosette out of paper. (DIY, instructions here) Add a little crystal in the center and your ready to glue it on to the top of the open end of the clothes pin.

So easy right! These are just really cute to be used so many different ways. You can use them to hang a letter garland at a birthday party, or use them to hang photos on a clothes line at a shower or party! You can even just use them to clip a baggie closed, or put glue a magnet on the back and you can use it as a clip on your fridge. These would be really cute to add to a “house-warming” gift basket as well!

By Guest Blogger Vicky, from the blog “Alpha Design”.

In January this year I was overjoyed when my niece gave birth to a little baby girl. There was a rush within the family to buy presents for this new addition and I saw many of them giving things like clothes and toys but I wanted to do do something a bit different. Something that marked her birth and would be a keepsake for her in years to come. So, I decided that I would paint her a canvas with her name and birth date on it.

I looked online for ideas and after much deliberation I decided that I would use an owl theme. I know from my card making that Owls are very on trend at the moment and so this seemed like a good choice. I created a mental picture of what I wanted it to look like and went out to a local craft shop to buy a canvas. I got a small square canvas and then I went to my local DIY store where I bought a number of paint tester pots. Acrylic paints soon add up in price and so this seemed like a great way to save some cash.

After all of this, I armed myself with a paintbrush and just went for it. I had only previously painted two canvases before this and so this seemed like quite a big task of myself. Eventually (after a few weeks of hard work!) I finished my picture. I used raised paints that come in a nozzled tube to add the writing and the rest of the picture is just done with my tester pots. I added the buttons on as eyes to make it a little more 3dimensional and interesting.

I hope to do much more painting as I really enjoyed the whole experience. Here are a couple of things I learned along the way:

It is best to draw out the picture you see in your head and keep it next to you the whole time. I also kept a few example pictures that I found on the internet with me too.

If you are going to mix your own colors then make sure that you have more than enough. There were a couple of times when I got into a bit of a panic because I thought that the color I had mixed would run out!

Have a break in order to refocus. After sitting for a few hours you can get quite tired and a bit bleary eyed. I found that I painted much better when I had regular breaks and a chocolate biscuit!

Practice writing in paint on a piece of paper first so that you get it right on the canvas!

My niece really liked the unique present and it will look great on her pink bedroom wall!

What you need:

Candle holder

Candle

Scissors

Book pages

Mod Podge Hard Coat

Step 1. Trim the edges of the book pages so only the block of words remain. The number of pages you’ll need depends on the amount of words on each page and the size of the candle holder. Cut the pages into thin strips, then cut them into thirds.

Step 2. Remove any price stickers from the candle holder, wash it thoroughly, then let it dry.

Step 3. Put a layer of Mod Podge on the sides of the candle holder, then start placing down the paper strips. Overlap some of the pieces to create a textured look, but try to keep the layers as thin as possible so the light shines through. As you overlap the strips, put Mod Podge in between the pieces so they don’t bubble. Don’t worry if some stick out over the edge, you can trim them later.

Step 4. After you have the sides of the candle holder covered with the strips, apply a layer of Mod Podge over them. Use your finger to apply it so you can flatten out the pieces as you go along.

Step 5. When you’re finished with the sides, flip the candle holder over and use the Mod Podge to apply strips to the bottom, then put another layer on top to seal them on.

Step 6. Leave the candle holder upside down, let it dry thoroughly, then trim the excess strips on the edges. If there’s any rough edges, use your finger to apply Mod Podge to smooth them out, then let it dry before using.

By Recycled Crafts Contributor, Anitra from the blog “Coffee Pot People”.

I love paper. All kinds of paper—handmade, manufactured, striped, floral, plaid, plain. Okay, that last one maybe not as much as the printed varieties. The solid-color sheets from the scrapbooking pads I buy tend to accumulate, while I use up their more interesting siblings.

So I decided to try altering them into something more interesting.

One of my favorite methods results in paper that has a leather-like texture. It makes a great background for collage, and is a lot easier to glue than actual leather, not to mention considerably less expensive.

To get your leather-textured paper, take a sheet of whatever color you like, and hold it under the sink tap until it’s evenly wet, but not soggy. Now wad it up, gently but thoroughly. After you’ve got it crumpled into a tight ball, carefully unwad it. Wet paper is fragile, so easy does it, or you’ll put a finger through it.

When the paper is unwadded and spread out flat, you can iron it. Use a fairly hot iron, and put a clean, dry sheet of paper over your wrinkled up wet one, or the iron may stick and/or take off some of the color. You now have a sheet of paper that has a wrinkled look, but is flat. Lay it out to dry completely. (My favorite place is on top of the dryer while I’m drying a load of clothes.)

You’ll notice your “new” paper has more than wrinkles; it will now have a heavier, thicker feel to it, as well.

Another way I alter paper is to spritz it with another color. Dip an old toothbrush into a small puddle of paint, and run your finger over the bristles, flicking paint in a spray over the surface of the paper.

If you want the paint to spread a bit, do an additional spritz with water. You can see a few puddles on my sheet, here. If that happens on yours, gently lay a paper towel over it. Don’t press down on it; just let it soak up the excess on its own.

I’ve used purple on lavender here, but white on black would be another choice, or blue on green. Any color combination you want is as close as your paint stash.

As with your “leather” paper, lay flat to dry.

And here’s one using several colors. I think it has distinct possibilities!

And here’s one way I used my finished paper:

The warm weather always means a big upswing in the appearance of iced drinks around our house, and with them, an upswing in the need for coasters. This year I’ve ditched the plain jane ones I’ve had for a while and instead my tables are decked out with some custom stamped tile pretties.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

Plain white tiles (4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″)

Felt

Decorative edging scissors or punch

Craft Glue

1. Cut squares of paper using the decorative edging scissors 1/2 inch smaller than the tiles.

2. Stamp your images in the center of the paper.

3. Apply a thin coat of Modge Podge to the surface of the tile and smooth the squares of paper in place. Allow the tiles to dry before proceeding.

4. Apply a thin coat of Modge Podge over the paper, work out any bubbles and apply a second coat when the first is dry.

5. Spray the top side of the tiles with two to three thin coats of glaze spray, allowing each layer to dry before applying the next.

6. Once all coats are dry, cut squares of felt that are just barley smaller than the tiles and glue them to the underside of the tiles to protect your tabletop.

A true, working skateboard (24 inches long) this skateboard is plain, unfinished wood, ready for your child to add their own design, which means that you don’t have to have a skull and crossbones skateboard (unless you want to, that is!)

The kit comes complete with skateboard, paint, brushes and peel and stick cuttable grip paper. You can choose to paint just the underside of the skateboard as traditional skateboard generally are or paint both top and bottom and add the grip paper in sections. The kit doesn’t come with any kind of sealant so if you think your skateboard might get left out in the elements, you may want to give it a coat of polyurethane before adding the grip paper, but otherwise, you have everything you need, right out of the box.

This kit was a huge hit on a sunny Saturday at our house and I’m sure it would be at yours as well! Give it a try and send them out for a spin (with appropriate protective gear, of course!)

Wine charms are a very popular accessory for get togethers. Charms help people keep tabs on their drink. Here is a cute idea for coffee charms. Coffee charms can be used for groups of people who get together and drink coffee!

Here is how I made these.

1) Went online and Googled “Coffee Puns” to get some cute saying for my coffee charms, and printed them out on cardstock.

2) Glued the coffee sayings on miniture tiles.

3 ) I Found a few coffee beans/grounds from the coffee stash in the kitchen.

4) Purchased a few packs of “Hoop earrings”.

5) Hot glued everything together to make the Coffee charms!

6) Decorated some finishing touches with puffy paint.

7) Here you go! Coffee Charms!

By Crafts-a lot Contributor, Mable who is an avid reader of craft blogs & magazines and has aspirations to improve her crafting skills.

Have you decorated your Easter eggs yet? I found an article by Parents Magazines and they share some creative ideas on how to decorate your Easter eggs without using traditional dye.

One of my favorite ideas was adding Thicker Foam Stickers to spell out seasonal phrases on eggs, or plastic eggs. You could use this idea for directions for your Easter egg hunt, or just write “Happy Easter” as a centerpiece.

Shared by Tara Donne

You can also raid your crafting stash for special egg décor. Use any all-purpose glues to add buttons, sequins, ribbons, gems, rhinestones, or flowers. Parents Magazine suggested CreateForLess as a supplier of colorful buttons and craft glue.

Read the article here!

Glue gun and glue sticks
Newspapers

Instructions

1. Apply texture. Cover work surface with newspapers. Insert craft picks into bottom end of each egg. (Note: after texturing each egg, insert into Styrofoam block to dry.) According to manufacturer’s instructions, apply each texture to one egg in each of the three sizes of eggs as follows:

For stucco eggs: Use knife to apply one coat onto three eggs, moving knife back and forth to create stripes.

For crackle eggs: Brush primer – sealer onto three eggs. Let dry. Use knife to apply smooth coat of crackle texture to eggs, like flat-frosting a cake. (Note: the thicker the application, the larger the cracks, the thinner the application, the finer the cracks.)

For thick texture eggs: Use knife to apply one coat onto three eggs, moving knife on and off egg to create bumpy texture.

For glass texture eggs: Use brush to apply two smooth coats of glass texture onto three eggs. Let dry between coats.

2. Paint eggs. Spray stucco texture eggs stripes of Copper and Brilliant Silver, allowing colors to slightly run together. Return eggs to Styrofoam block to dry. Spray crackle eggs Antique Gold. Spray thick texture eggs Copper. Spray gloss texture eggs Brilliant Silver.

3. Attach accents and ribbon. Remove adhesive dot from filigree accents and discard. Thread 8″ ribbon length through filigree accent. (Tip: For ease in putting ribbon through filigree accent, fold 6″ wire length in half. Place center of ribbon length into folded end of wire. Thread cut ends of wire through hole – similar to using a needle and thread.) Remove wire and trim ribbon ends at bottom of filigree accent. Use glue gun to attach to top of egg. For bottom filigree accent, repeat, using 6″ ribbon length. Cut bottom loop with scissors so that four cut ends of ribbon extend out. Hot glue to bottom of egg.

4. Embellish eggs. Attach jewels into three cluster formations on silver eggs and randomly attach jewels to striped silver and copper eggs . Hang eggs onto wire tree. Place gold paper shreds at base of tree. (Note: If gold shreds unavailable, spray natural kraft color shreds with Antique Gold.)

But I can NEVER find the little labels that come with them.
Here’s what you need:

Chalkboard Contact paper (or use Chalkboard paint)

Craft knife and stencil or Die cutting machine

1. Trace and cut or use a decorative tag shape die to cut out a fun shape from the chalkboard contact paper.

2. Peel off, stick to the front of your file and write (and erase) away!
