Jar Snowman

The holidays may be over, but winter is not! Making it still totally OK and adorable to make snowman crafts.

What you will need:

Jar (I used a Ragu Pizza Sauce Jar)
Felt
Lace
Fabric for a scarf
Googly eyes
Rocks
Tissue paper
Construction paper
Clear Gel tacky glue
Paint brush
Scissors
Glass bowl

Directions:

Wash and dry the jar.
Using the tissue paper, cut out several squares of tissue paper. Cut a variety of sizes.
Put about a 1/4 cup of glue in a bowl. Add a tbsp water and mix well. The glue will be a little easier to work with now.
Paint the entire outside of the jar.
Cover with the tissue paper.
Secure any lose edges by painting glue over it.
Allow to dry.
Using construction paper, make a cone shape.
Glue on googly eyes.
Glue on the cone nose.
Take a walk outside and gathers some small pebbles.
Wash and dry the pebbles.
Glue the pebbles onto the jar to make the snowman’s mouth.
Cover the lid in felt. Be sure to cut off all the excess felt so the lid will still fit.
Add lace to the edge of the lid.
Tie a piece of plaid fabric around the snowman’s body for a scarf. (I actually used a prop from another craft, but fabric looks just as awesome).
You could place a flameless candle inside for a special glow!

Personal Note Party Favor

Spending time with family and friends is one of the best things about the holidays. Although it’s important to always tell loved ones how grateful you are for them, during Christmas is an especially great time to do so. This year, consider making personal note party favors for each guest at your dinner party. They take little time to create and are incredibly inexpensive.

What you’ll need:

Any Christmas book
White paper
Glitter glue
Ribbon
Mod Podge
Flat back rhinestones (optional)

Step 1. Choose your background material. I used a broken and worn down book of vintage Christmas music, but other options include Christmas story books or cookbooks. Each page you use should be double-sided.

Step 2. Cut the white paper into rectangles that are proportionate to the background paper. Write your personal notes on each one, then use Mod Podge to glue it to the center of the background paper.

Step 3. Use glitter glue to decorate the outer edges of the party favor. I did a red bow on the top, small red dot on the bottom and green wavy lines along the edges. You can also attach flat back rhinestones depending on how heavy the paper is. Let the party favors dry overnight before moving onto the next step. Test the glue by lightly tapping it with your finger to make sure it’s completely dry.

Step 4. Roll up the party favors and secure each one with a ribbon.

To distribute them to guests, place the party favors on the plates at the table or put them in a decorative basket and give them out as the guests arrive or leave.

Fleece Wreath

Rag wreaths have been done since…well, I don’t know how long. Here’s one I couldn’t resist though! After seeing one similar on Etsy last year, I had to try making my own. It’s simple, quick and inexpensive.

You’ll need:

½ to ¾ yd. fleece (your choice of color—I used cream)
Scrap of coordinating colored fleece
Wire hanger
Scissors
Measuring tape/ruler

Cut fleece into 2″ x 4″ pieces. Stretch your hanger into a circle, then twist the top into a loop so you have a way to hang it.

Begin tying your pieces of fleece onto your hanger.

Make sure to push pieces close together. You want to tie as many on as possible so you get a full looking wreath.

Take your coordinating piece of fleece and make a bow around the top, or be creative and decorate however you wish! This could be part of great table centerpiece.

Vintage Christmas Music Ornament

I love homemade ornaments; I think they really add personality to a Christmas tree. This year, make use of vintage paper materials by making ornaments out of them. You’ll save a huge amount of money, prevent paper from going into the landfill, and make sparkly personalized items for yourself or loved ones.

What you’ll need:

Vintage music sheet
Snowflake template
Colored cardstock
Scissors or craft knife
Small hole punch
Mod Podge
Ribbon
Glitter glue

Step 1. Choose a snowflake template. Cookie cutters work well. There are a variety to choose from whether you want something simple or one a little more elaborate.

Step 2. Use Mod Podge to adhere the sheet of vintage Christmas music onto cardstock. Depending on the size of the ornaments you’d like to make and the size of the sheet music, you’ll likely be able to make at least two ornaments out of each sheet of music. Give it at least an hour to dry before moving onto the next step.

Step 3. Print the snowflake template on the cardstock side, not on the paper side. Ink sometimes has a tendency to blur or bleed a bit on vintage paper, which typically doesn’t happen on cardstock.

Step 3. Either using scissors or a craft knife, cut out the snowflake shape. For the more elaborate designs, I recommend you use a craft knife as it’s much easier to maneuver than scissors.

Step 4. Punch a hole into a top section of the snowflake, then cover the ornament with glitter glue. I used green because of the green music print on the paper. Give the ornaments at least two hours to dry.

Step 5. Tie a matching ribbon through the hole.

Christmas Gift Card

This is the time of year for special cards of all types. A special card with a gift card to someone’s favorite store is always a big hit this time of year. Why not make it even more special by creating the card by hand?

Supplies Needed:

Graphic 45 Christmas Emporium Paper Pad
Green and Red Cardstock
3-d adhesive
Favorite tape runner
Glue
Scoring Board
Photo Corner Punch
Paper Trimmer

Begin by cutting a 6″ x 12″ card base from the green cardstock, score in the center at 6″ and fold in half. This will create a 6″ x 6″ card for you to use. Next, cut a piece of green cardstock that measures 6 ½” long x 6″ wide. Using the scoring board, score the length of the paper starting from left to right at ½”, ¾”, ½”, ½”, ¾”, 1 ½”, 1 ½”. Now you need to fold that piece in a peaks and valleys manner. The first flap, which is the ½” score on your left, is folded downward. The ¾”” score is left flat, the next ½” score is folded downward to the valley and the next ½” finishes the valley fold. The next score is the ¾” score and it is left flat. The first 1 ½” is folded down which forms the front side of this piece that faces the opening of the card. The last 1 ½” is folded underneath. When you are finished your piece should look like this picture when it’s attached to the card.

Run a small piece of tape from the tape runner on the inside of the valley fold area to close it up so the gift card will sit straight in the holder.

Starting on the bottom of the card attach the 1 ½” piece which was the last section you scored to the card using the glue so it will hold when the card is opened and closed. Attach the 1/2″ flap to the top of the card. Refer to second picture for help if needed.

Once the card is completely assembled refold all the score lines to give them a crisp fold so the card closes easily. This may have to be done more than once to get it to close.

On the front of the card, cut a 5″ x 4 ¾” piece of Merry and Bright patterned paper from the Graphic 45 Christmas Emporium Paper Pad and adhere it to the card. Trim the “Hearty Greeting” message from the Santa Express sheet in the paper pad and adhere it using the 3-d adhesive circles on each corner. Using the photo corner punch, punch 4 pieces from the red cardstock and attach them to each corner.

On the inside of the card, cut a 3 ¼” x 2″ piece of red cardstock and adhere it. Cut the “Received From” tag from the Special Delivery sheet from the paper pad and adhere it to the cardstock. Cut a 5 ½” x 2″ piece of red cardstock for the bottom of the card and place it on there. Over the top of the cardstock leaving approximately ¾” of the red showing adhere a 5 ½” x 3″ piece of the Merry and Bright patterned paper.

Place the gift card in the holder and it’s ready to give as a special gift.

Easy Tree Skirt

We typically get a tree to decorate our living room, but this year we added a little tree to our family room, which meant we needed another tree skirt! I had fabric, so I decided to make my own. Here’s how to make yours! Note: This is for a SMALL tree skirt. You will need more fabric for a larger skirt and will probably need to make a pattern to do so.

You need:

1 ¼ yd. fabric (I used corduroy)
1 Fat Quarter or other scrap fabric
Grosgrain Ribbon
Heat & Bond
Thread
Scissors
Pinking Sheers

1. Cut your fabric 44″ x 44″. Fold into a square.

2. From the center corner, where all the corner is all folds, measure down 4″ marking in several places. If you connect the dots, you should have a curved line. Cut the curve.

3. Measuring from the curve down your fabric, mark 18″ down in several places. If you connect the dots, you should have a curved line. Cut the curve.

4. Make one cut all the way from the bottom to the top.

5. From your fat quarter, cut out a design or designs you want to appliqué.

6. Attach your design: Click HERE for a tutorial on how to appliqué.

7. Finish your edges. Normally, I would serge my edges or fold under and sew, but since I was in a hurry to put it under my new tree, I just used my pinking shears this time!

8. Add your ribbon: Cut 4—8″ pieces of ribbon. Place your ribbon 2″ and then another 6 ½” down from the center back along the “slit” and sew. Repeat on other side of slit.

Place under your tree!

Printed Christmas Ornaments

I have made paper ball ornaments for years, but this year I decided we had to kick it up a notch and try something different. I created this project using items from CreateForLess.com and my home printer. You can use any image you want. I think photos would be a terrific option, too!

You’ll need:

1 sheet of cardstock with a printed image
8″ medium gauge wire
Needle nose pliers
Scissors or swing arm paper cutter
Beads and sequins (2 of each for each ornament)
10″ of ribbon
1 drinking straw
Large safety pin or needle
Pin cushion (optional)

Here’s how:

1. Copy your image on your cardstock.

2. Cut your image in 6″ x 3/4″ wide strips as you see in the photo. Make sure to keep them in order!

3. You will need 16 6″x 3/4″ strips so use the excess paper to make plain strips if you don’t have enough strips with your printed image.

4. With your safety pin, poke a hole on each end of each strip 1/4″ up from the edge and right in the center (making sure you keep them in order).

5. Bend a loop on the end of your wire and string a bead and then a sequin.

6. With your printed strips facing down toward the loop and sequin, place one end of the strips in order on the wire and then thread on your straw.

7. This is the most important step! Starting from the bottom strip (the strip that is touching the sequin) and working your way up to the top strip, thread your strips over the straw.

8. When you’ve worked your way to the last strip, thread on your sequin and another bead and create another loop. Thread your ribbon through the loop and hang!

All in One Christmas Card Treat Box

What’s more fun than receiving a card with a treat attached? This cute little gift box is attached directly to the card and can be decorated for any occasion and filled with any kind of treat. The ideas are limited only by your imagination.

Supplies Used:

Graphic 45 Christmas Emporium Paper Pad
Merry Christmas Rub-Ons
Red Cardstock
Laminate
1″ Square Punch
Tape Runner
Scoring Board
Paper Trimmer
Scissors
Glue
3-d Adhesive Dots

Begin by cutting a piece of red cardstock to 6 ½” x 11 ¾”. Then, using your scoring board and the long side of the paper score at 3 ½”, 7″, 8 ½”, 9 ¼”, 10 ¾” and 11 ½”. Rotate the paper so the short side is at the top of the scoring board and again score at ¾” and 5 ¾”.

Next, trim using the scissors the ¾” flap from the left of the cardstock on both the top and bottom up to the 7″ score line as seen in the picture. This should leave you 5 tabbed areas at the end (far right) of your cardstock with the last tab measuring ¼”.

Now, cut the tabs on each score line just up to the score line that runs the length of the paper. Cut off and remove the extra ¼” pieces on each end. Repeat this step on the other end of the cardstock piece.

Fold the box at the score lines to give them a good solid crease. It should look like this.

Unfold the box and cut a strip of the, “Tis the Season” patterned paper from the Graphic 45 Paper Pad that measures the length and width (5″ x 1 ½”) of the front panel of the box and adhere it on. Position the square punch where you want the window to begin at the top and start punching the window out; overlapping the next punch over the previous one to be sure to open the entire space. I positioned the window 1″ from the top and bottom of the box, but you can choose how tall you want your window to be on it. You may have to fold the ¼” flap at the bottom of the paper inward so the punch fits up to the center flap.

At this point, your box will look like this. Cut a piece of laminate to fit on the inside of the box behind the window making sure to cut it longer and wider than the window opening and adhere it using the glue.

Using the tape runner, place a small amount of tape on the ¾” tabs and fasten them to the larger tab as shown in the pictures. Make sure not to adhere the very top flap because that’s the one that will open and close the box as seen in the second picture below.

Here is what your card treat box will look like at this point.

Now cut a piece of the “Tis the Season” patterned paper from the Graphic 45 Christmas Emporium Paper Pad that measures 4 ½” x 3″ and tape it on the front of the card using the tape runner. Cut a 3 ½” x 2 ½” piece of red cardstock and adhere it to the patterned paper. Trim around the “Right and Jolly Christmas Tag from the Santa Express” sheet in the Graphic 45 Paper Pad and using 3- adhesive dots glue it to the red cardstock. Open the card up and on the inside place the “Merry Christmas” rub-on and rub to adhere it. Trim 2 of the striped corners from an extra piece of the “Tis the Season” patterned paper and tape them to the left corners.

Fill with a special treat and your card treat box is ready to share.

Red Christmas Candle Card

This is another charming Christmas card project is really quick and easy to make. Time to complete 5 minutes!

What you’ll need:

EK Success punch – Photo label
EK Success Paper Shaper punch – .75 x 1.5 oval
Martha Stewart punch – Pop up Water Lily
Medium Holly Punch
Any Edge punch – I used Martha Stewart Eyelet Lace
White, Tan, Silver and Red cardstock
Green glitter cardstock
Sakura 3D crystal lacquer or JudiKins Diamond Glaze
The Art Institute Glitter- Christmas Red
Rotary cutter
Cutting mat
Glue or Pop up dots

Instructions:

1. Trim white card stock with Rotary cutter to 8″x10″. Score the cardstock in the middle at the 5″ line and use a bone folder to crease the edge of paper to form a card 5″ x 8″.

2. Using Rotary cutter trim Tan cardstock to 5″x8″ and use glue to adhere to front of card.

3. Use Eyelet Lace Edge punch to create two red and silver cardstock strips for top and bottom of card. Slightly overlap silver cardstock while gluing red piece on top. Trim completed pieces to 5″ and glue on top and bottom of card.

4. Punch out two red cardstock pieces from Photo Label and use middle shape to create candle. Take Crystal lacquer or Diamond glaze and create drips down top of candles, sprinkle red glitter shake off excess. Set aside to dry.

5. Punch two red cardstock pieces from oval, trim one side so it looks like a wick, coat with glaze, let dry.

6. Punch out 4 Water Lily pieces from red cardstock, coat with glaze and sprinkle red glitter on top. Set aside to dry.

7. Punch out 8 Holly leaves from green glitter cardstock.

8. When everything is dry glue wick slightly underneath candle, glue candles to front of card. Attach Water Lilies and leaves to complete card.

It’s Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas Cards

The holidays are filled with long lists of things to do and sometimes it’s just impossible to do it all. Often the one thing that is crossed off the list is making our own Christmas cards. That doesn’t have to be the case. Here is a quick and easy way to make 4 beautiful cards that can take care of some on your list or give you a start to creating the multiples you need.

Supplies Used:

Green, Red and Brown Cardstock
Graphic 45 Christmas Emporium Paper Pad or Happy Holidays Paper
Holiday Greetings Rub-Ons
Snowflakes Embossing Folder
Stars Embossing Folder
Die Cut/Embossing Machine
Your favorite tape runner

First, cut each piece of cardstock (red, brown and green) to 10″ in length by 5″ wide and fold in half. By using a 12″ x 12″ piece of cardstock and cutting it down to this size it will give you 2 cards out of each sheet of cardstock so you will be well on your way to create as many cards as you need.

Next place one half of the cardstock inside the embossing folder (snowflakes or stars) that you are using and run it through your die cut/embossing machine. You can do all of your cards this way or just some of them.

Using the Graphic 45 Happy Holidays paper, cut the 4 pictures individually and adhere them to the cardstock with your favorite tape runner.

An easy way to place the rub-ons on your cards is to cut each one out of the sheet they came on and lay them on your card as I did here.

Using the edge of the craft stick and a little pressure rub the entire piece until it is adhered to the cardstock. A good way to tell if it has completely adhered to the cardstock is when you see the plastic covering have a frosted look to it.

If it hasn’t completely transferred continue rubbing it until it does or if you have already lifted the clear plastic off and noticed that not all of it transferred carefully line it up where it needs to go and rub it some more.

You are now on your way to having cards to send to your family and friends and can cross that off your holiday “to do” list instead of erasing it and putting it your list for next year!

DIY Gift Idea: Customize Your Very Own Fairy Dust

Tinker Bell has been quiet popular at our house lately and I’m sure our house isn’t the only one, so I thought a personalized jar of fairy dust would be a nice surprise.If you are looking for a great stocking stuffer this is s simple project with cute results.

I used a glass vial I had at the house, but these are available in different sizes at the craft stores.

I printed the childs name and “Fairy Dust” out on a plain white piece of paper. It could be on an cream or antiqued paper. Just use paper, cardstock will not bend around the glass as nice.

Once printed out, tear the paper around the printing to give it an old feel. In this example I used an ink pad to create the look of a burnt edge. I like to use Distress Ink in Walnut Stain, but a black or brown ink pad would work too. I take the paper and lightly brush it against the ink pad.

NOTE: If you choose to try and burn the edge with a flame, do it outside or over the kitchen sink and make sure you leave a lot of space between the ripped edge and the printing – paper burns fast and crumbles when trying to glue it down.

To attach the label I used Mod Podge. I dab a little to the back and stick it to the vial where I want it, then I coat the whole label on the front with Mod Podge. This seals all the edges tight to the bottle.

While the Mod Podge is still wet I carefully go in and clean the bottle off. If the Mod Podge starts to dry, a damp paper towel can clean the glass. Let dry.

I didn’t fill the whole vial with glitter because it is big, so it’s about half full, which is fine. Remember a little goes a long way – at least that’s what I’m going to tell the tiny one. I made a custom blend of “Dust”. I started with the base of a pearl color, in a fine grade of glitter, then from the Martha Stewart Glitter Collection I added dashes and shakes of different colors. Shake, Shake, Shake and voila, custom dust color – hard to match, but the little one can’t find a match either, therefore it must be special.

Now to seal the vial. I used a pink candle. Sit the vial on a dinner plate – ceramic or metal pan, light the candle and hold it so it drips. The best thing to do is to just drip the wax into the top center. As the wax pool builds up it will run over the sides. IF THERE IS WAX ON THE LABEL JUST WAIT UNTIL IT IS COLD!! Don’t touch it yet. Finish up with sealing the jar.

Now that the wax is cold gently pick off the drips you don’t want. This is one of the reasons to use Mod Podge over the entire label, the wax will just flake off, if it is plain paper the wax will not flake off and might rip the label if picked at.

Quick and easy. Once it’s sealed it could be a shelf sitter, not to be used or it can be opened and a magical time can be had by all.

This fine glitter is fun to have around and I don’t mind my child playing with it. There is glitter all over the house 24/7. I used to work at a store that dusted each package that left the door so each customer could have a little fairy magic for their day. So I’ve been covered in glitter a lot. BUT it will get everywhere!!! Husband will go to work with it in his hair, the dogs will shimmer in the sun so beware and enjoy.

Christmas Ornament Card

This charming Christmas card project is really quick and easy to make. Time to complete 5 minutes!

What you’ll need:

Any Edge punch – I used Martha Stewart Cherish
Fiskars punch – 2″ circle
Any shiny Christmas patterned cardstock and Christmas patterned paper
White cardstock for card
Gold pen
Ruler
Rotary cutter
Cutting mat
Glue or Pop up dots

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Trim white cardstock with Rotary cutter to 8″x10″. Score the cardstock in the middle at the 5″ line and use a bone folder to crease the edge of paper to form a card 5″ x 8″.

2. From patterned cardstock use Cherish Edge punch to create two strips for top and bottom of card. Trim completed pieces to 5″ and glue on top and bottom of card.

3. Punch out three circles from Christmas cardstock. Create a gold top for ornament by cutting sides off a square shape. Glue on top of ornament. Line up ornaments and glue in place

4. Using gold pen and ruler draw a line from top of card to top of ornament.
