About Alyssa

Hello! My name is Alyssa. I am a, as they say, “real girl” crafter. I make stuff for my home that virtually anyone can make, no matter their crafting experience or expertise. I love practical, beautiful home décor that often does double-duty, and include the crafting mistakes I make so you can avoid making them in the future. We all mess up, so embrace it! I find inspiration in things with hefty price tags, usually followed by the famous last words, “I could make that.” I love the outdoors, live music, my sisters, and admiring strangers’ dogs from afar. Although I currently reside in Seattle, I’m a small-town girl at heart who can often be found daydreaming in front of my office computer or on the couch with my overbearingly affectionate cat, Kristoff, who, if he’s lucky, will receive a very weird-looking, hand-crafted kitten sweater sometime in the future.

Hand Painted Sprout Planters

By Home Decor Contributor Alyssa

Get excited about living a healthy lifestyle with pretty hand painted planters to hold cress sprouts!

I committed recently to a healthier lifestyle. My norm used to be weekly runs to Taco Time, frequent binge watching of Netflix shows, the occasional walk on my lunch break to get out of the office, but not much else in the way of exercise. After realizing that while this lifestyle was easy, it was not making me feel very good about myself, something clicked in my brain and I became very determined to change. Enter the fun new healthy recipes, weird apartment-sized exercise equipment, and desperate attempt to make this drastic change a bit more convenient for myself. Although these little planters are just a small step in the right direction, they’re fun and they inspire me to make good choices every time I see them.

Recycled No Wax Candles

No Wax Recycled Candles

Why are candles so expensive?? I love having tons of candles lit throughout my home at any given time, but I also have anxiety about lighting them because I’m afraid to use them up too quickly, and what’s the point having nice things if you can’t use them? Right? Right??

Geo Soaps

These homemade soaps will be too pretty to use, and they're fun to make!

I have sort of an out-of-control obsession with hosting guests at our apartment. When looking for my new couch, everything we came across that didn’t turn into a bed was pretty much unacceptable. A large variety of adorable mugs (displayed for all to see) to offer coffee to guests in is a must. I freak out if there are dishes in the sink, all the candles should be lit, all linens washed, all floors vacuumed…basically, my apartment needs to look like an HGTV advertisement or I’m not doing life correctly and no one will ever speak to me again.

Elegant and Airy Tassel Wall Hanging

By Home Decor Contributor Alyssa

This easy wall hanging makes a huge statement that you can DIY in no time

I’m always on the lookout for ways to bring three-dimensional art to my walls. Believe it or not, with the amount of wall hangings I make, I only have two in my apartment because I love to give them to my friends as gifts. However, the wall space above our dresser has been looking particularly sad and in need of some love, so I took the opportunity to create something quick and simple for myself. I also took into consideration that our bedroom is usually pretty dark, as we live on the first floor sort of at the bottom of a hill and have no overhead lighting in that room. I wanted to make something cheery without being overwhelmingly colorful to brighten the space up a little. These airy tassels made out of beautiful watercolor-esque fabric were the perfect solution. Not to mention, the tassels I made use a new process I discovered and are about a hundred times easier. No complaints here.

Deceivingly Easy Knotted Wall Hanging

DIY Knotted Wall Hanging

I was basically in a constant state of euphoria during the holidays this year. The decorations, the music, the cocoa, the movies. It seems like everyone is in a better mood when the holidays are near. For me, it’s because of the opportunity to give meaningful things to the people I love. As I’ve mentioned before, my most prominent love language is gift-giving, so Christmas is like an IV of euphoria being pumped straight into my bloodstream.

Crepe Paper Poinsettia Gift Toppers

I have always been envious of those who can wrap and decorate their Christmas gifts like an expert. To me, the most exciting part of the holiday season is picking out, buying, and wrapping Christmas gifts, even though I’m sort of terrible at it. I get all excited at the concept of giving someone a beautifully wrapped present with something that they will love inside, but then I go for it and when I’m done, I’m pretty disappointed by the lack of holiday magic I feel when looking at them. It probably doesn’t help that I’m too cheap to buy nice wrapping paper.

Tassel Stocking DIY

Since moving to an apartment with a fireplace and mantle, I’ve known a stocking craft was in my future. Lee and I frequent the local Fremont Flea Market in Seattle, and there’s a booth there that sells Christmas stockings made from old Pendleton and other tribal print blankets. They’re gorgeous, but they come with a pretty hefty price tag. Plus, I can never seem to find one with a color scheme that matches my décor.
