Can you believe it is almost Valentine’s Day? This simple tree makes the perfect decoration for you mantle, shelf…or really where ever you want to share a little Valentine’s Day LOVE.
Here is what you need:
- Styrofoam Cone – I used this FloraCraft 12 x 3 7/8 inch Cone
- 7/8 inch Heart Punch
- Cardstock i – these Paper Accents Stash Packs are perfect for this!
- Aleene’s Tacky Glue
- Wooden Spool
- Paint – I used this Americana Decor Turquoise Stain
- Paint Brush
- Wooden or Foam Heart
- Piece of wire
Here is how to make it:
To start I decided to mark my cone so that all of my different color layers would be even. My cone was 12 inches tall, so I used my ruler and marked the cone in 3 inch increments on several different sizes. This made it very easy to know when to move onto the next color.
Then I started punching. Using 12 x 12 inch cardstock sheets, I found that 1 sheet each of 4 different colors of cardstock was enough. To break up the punching I did just 1 color at a time.
Then I started gluing. (Turn on a movie or a good show to watch while you are doing this.)
Keep going…you want your hearts to overlap enough so that the cone does not show through between the hearts.
Note: When I started I added a line of glue for each row, but as I went on I tried some different methods and found adding glue to the hearts actually worked a little better. You can kind of see it in the next picture.
Keep gluing and change colors as needed.
Then when you are done gluing, or just want a break, go ahead and paint your wooden spool.
Once dry, glue your spool to the bottom of your cone. (You could also use a candlestick for this.)
Then for a finishing grab 2 decorate hearts (either wood or foam) and glue a piece of wire between them. Once dry poke a hole into the top of your tree and insert that cute heart.
Ta-da! You are done, and you have the cutest little Valentine’s Day Tree ever.
