Create your own hauntingly fun ghost lanterns to welcome trick-or-treaters to your door. They’re the perfect not-too-scary Halloween decoration. Plus, these ghosts are so easy to make, it’s SPOOKY!
Here’s what you’ll need to make your own:
- Liquid fabric starch.
- Small toy balls, balloons, or other round objects.
- Plastic wrap.
- Black Felt.
- Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks, or White Craft Glue.
- Battery operated candles.
Place the balls on top of your jars to make your ghost forms. Set the forms onto some newspaper. Drape the ball and jar with a piece of plastic wrap, press to cover. Hold your cheesecloth up to the ghost forms to measure how long your pieces need to be to cover them, and add a couple of extra inches. Cut 4 single layer pieces of cheesecloth per ghost.
Pour some of your liquid starch into the bowl –I only used about 3/4 cup. Dip each single layer of cheesecloth into the starch, and run your fingers across the cheesecloth to remove the excess. Don’t wring all the starch out of your cheesecloth, you want it to be nice and wet, but not just so saturated that it’s dripping everywhere. Center the cheesecloth square over the ball, and drape the cloth over the ghost form, puddling the extra cheesecloth at the bottom so it looks like your ghost is floating.
Repeat with the other 3 pieces of cheesecloth, rotating how you position the corners of each piece of cloth so the ghost form is entirely covered. Let the ghosts dry until hard — a few hours, to overnight.
Carefully remove the now stiff cheesecloth ghosts from the forms, and peel away the plastic wrap. Cut eyes and a mouth out of black felt, and glue onto your ghost.
Place a battery operated candle under each ghost, and enjoy the spooky glow!
Happy Halloween crafting!
