This year’s Handmade Halloween Costume Contest Finalists will be put to the test with 3 guest judges, a CreateForLess employee, and our 5th judge, you! It’s time to introduce our three lovely judges, and make sure to check out their blogs for even more craft inspiration.
Our first judge to introduce is a very creative lady, Allison from the blog Dream a Little Bigger.
What was your best Halloween costume ever?
When I was a kid I was in dance classes which meant that my parents spent good money on recital outfits that were worn maybe 2 or 3 times. This meant that I got to wear dance recital outfits for Halloween practically every year.
But once, when I was really little and staying at my grandparents house, my Poppa asked if I wanted to go to the Halloween fair at the elementary school around the corner. I had no costume so he, my Mimmie and I made me a witch outfit with one of their black sweatshirts, some purple leggings made from the sleeves of a shirt and some ratted out hair that I later regretted, big time! We bought me a witch’s hat at the five and dime and I swear that was probably my favorite costume ever!
What type of candy did you love to get while trick-or-treating, and what was the biggest disappointment?
I loved anything chocolate or homemade, like Rice Krispie Treats (my how times have changed). I hated Smarties so, so much and those awful Tart ‘n Tinies -blech.
What are some of your favorite Halloween crafts?
Pumpkin carving has always been a big deal in my family and I’ve always really enjoyed it. One year, for decor for my nephews birthday we carved 30 something pumpkins. I had them piled in the trunk of my car and all in the back seat and drove the almost 3 hour journey to my sister’s house. We carved pumpkins all day and all night long. We were sick of pumpkins, but seeing them at his party was so, so neat.
What are you going as for Halloween this year?
Unfortunately, I’m kind of shy, so I don’t “go as anything” other than the person who gets to drive all over creation and carry the masks and props the children are sick of wearing/using.
What were you last year?
Last year I went as the one that drove all over creation and carried masks and props
What was the best costume you’ve ever seen?
When I was a kid, my dad dressed up as the wolf man with this hairy, scary mask. We have pictures of it and I always thought it was the neatest costume ever. There are tons of subsequent pictures of my sister and I wearing the mask, sometimes in Easter dresses, sometimes in underwear.
What was your biggest costume fail?
One year my mom got me a pair of humongous plastic clown shoes to go with a, you guessed it, clown dance recital costume to “jazz it up a bit”. Unfortunately I didn’t wear normal shoes and the plastic wore out on the asphalt pretty quickly. It was awful.
What is your favorite thing about fall?
I love the temperature, the crisp cool air, the crafting with golds, browns and oranges, the fall scented candles, the pumpkin patch and taking the boys trick or treating.
What’s your favorite fall recipe?
Every year I make tons of chocolate covered caramel apples. They’re a huge hit and I get asked to make them every fall without fail!
