I am in love with the trend in keepsake jewelry. The cute pendants with the kids name on or even more so, the fingerprint charm. This is a simple way to get the look without the huge cost of sterling or gold. This is great craft for kids to make and give as gifts.
Supplies:
- Sculpey
- Chrome spray paint
- Black acrylic paint
- Jump Ring
- Toothpick
- Cord or bead supplies
To make these cut off a small piece of Sculpey, roll it into a ball the size of a pea and have little one press their thumb into it. An alternative is to squash the ball with a flat bottomed can or jar to make a round disk then have the little one press their finger into it. Both of these seemed to work well.

After the print has been made use the toothpick to make a hole at the top for the jump ring so the pendant will hang straight on the necklace.
Place them in the oven using the instructions that came with your clay. Once cooled take them and hang them on some string. I did this because the little one and I have a heavy hand when it comes to using the spray paint. By hanging them the paint will not pool in the grooves of the finger print.
Let the chrome paint dry, then using a black “wash” of acrylic paint brush the paint over the surface. Quickly before it dries, wipe of the black paint using a paper towel. This emphasizes the grooves and creates a look of the polishing compound inside the ridges. When real silver pendants are polished the polish compound that is used gets into the ridges and it gets black, we are trying to recreate that look.
Add a jump ring to the pendant and hang it on a cord or add it to a beadwork project.
The one pendant has thumbprints of the whole family, it looks like a modern silver piece, I love it. Have fun!
