Enter to win Shirtmaking & Shirtmaking Techniques by David Page Coffin. Prize includes Shirtmaking Developing Skills for Fine Sewing and the Shirtmaking DVD.

Author David Page Coffin shows how to create elegant, custom-fit garments for a woman or a man that have a great tailored look and fit perfectly. And, even more important, once you learn to make and fit a shirt — whether you have sewn for weeks or years — your sewing skills will be dramatically improved. In the companion video, Shirtmaking Techniques, Coffin demonstrates the techniques that are the hallmarks of fine shirtmaking and shows how to master rolled hems, flat-felled seams, collars, cuffs, and plackets.

Every Friday we’ll post a giveaway on Think Crafts and all you have to do is comment on the blog post answering the question of the week. We’ll pick the winner and contact them via email. Deadline is midnight tonight and the winner will be announced Monday. One entry per person please.

I taught myself to sew when I was about 10years old. There was a lot of trial and error, but I managed to make my first dress at that time and today, I love making dresses for my granddaughters.

Sewing is a tradition in my family- every woman sews, so it was a natural transition from my grandmother, my mother and all my aunties to me! Thankfully!

My Mother taught me the basics of sewing and gave me my appreciation for handmade garments. I went on to take Home Ec in Junior High and Senior High School. I find that sewing is something you are never finished learning. Each project you learn a little something new. :)

My mother taught me to sew through 4-H. She was one of the leaders. By the time I took Home Ec in high school I was asked to help other students who had NO prior experience. My mother is 90 now and still does some sewing.

My mom when very young making pillows and easy square things. My Auntie as a 4-H project learning patterns. My wonderful Home Economics teacher in Jr/Sr High School challenged me with some amazing projects. And finally, again my mom, learning how to quilt and machine embroidery! I am very blessed and it is now my therapy/alone time.

I learned to sew in Home Economics class in the early 70′s. I still live in the same small town and see that teacher on occasion and have made sure to let her know how much her mentoring has been such a huge blessing in my life!

My mother and my grandmother taught me how to sew. They were both excellent seamstresses and I inherited their sewing “stuff” including old patterns from the 1940s.

My mom was the first person who taught me to sew. I made a pillow case by sewing small flour sacks together. I did these my hand. Then a year later mom got an old singer machine that had the old foot press. I made a robe out of old towels. I was in the 3rd or 4th grade. That was some good old memories.

Well, my mom first showed me how to sew, but then I took lessons at the Y where I think I really learned more than I could with my mother hovering over me and, um, fussing. Really learned a lot in HS sewing classes. Remember them? What a useful skill to have all these years.

My mother’s sewing sparked my first interest as a child. I loved the items she made for me, and I soon wanted to be able to craft my own “creations”. After a few lessons from her, Home Ec classes in junior high school gave me the knowledge and confidence to continue learning and creating for over 40 years. My latest creation? Felt “cowboy boots” shoe covers for my grandson’s pre-school Rodeo Day!
