I allways reuse many things, usually none of my crafts, no matter what I´m doing, is made completely of new materials. The latest project was a de-constructed dress, made of old, worn t-shirts and longsleeves. Before that I learned to re-purpose babyfood glases into candleholders and spice jars.

    Greetings from Berlin :) Mone

I love to re-purpose items (so green) and thrifty. Sometimes I save too many things to re-purpose and my husband thinks they are ‘junk’…. but to me they are treasures.

I’ve re-purposed lots of different things….but one of my favorite things to re-purpose is buttons.
when i was a child..my grandmother always cut buttons off of old used clothing that was destined for the “rag bag”..and kept them in a 5 gallon glass jar…
when she died..my mother kept that jar..and added her own buttons to it…
i loved that jar of buttons…and to this day..i find myself saving buttons from clothing that is no longer being worn…and later…using them when i craft…and create cards

I used some old candle holders and glued a flat plate on top to make a cake plate for the nieces and nephews birthdays. I usually paint the candle holder a pale pink for the girls. They like their own cake plate and use it from one birthday to the next.

My local charity store saves for me all the broken and otherwise useless bits of jewellery not fit for sale. In return I made them a picture using only the broken jewellery they saved fo me, sweet papers, and some 50 year old fabric which had belonged to my husbands grandmother. The only new things were some ribbon and metal flake. I gave the piece back to them and they are auctioning it off to raise funds for the charity.

My goodness, what -haven’t- I repurposed? Lately it’s cocoa tins and snack tins (which are actually chipboard, not metal). Some are decoupaged, others are painted. All make lovely display containers for our local elementary school’s holiday and student stores!

This week, I used old ribbons to make wreaths. In the past, I’ve used old beads and buttons and scrap papers to make greeting cards. I also use the tiny left-over pieces of tissue paper to embellish wooden beads. They look like they have been painted with watercolors. :)

I like to repurpose clothes from the thrift shop. I chop them up and use them as pieces in crazy quilt blocks.

I also like to repurpose candle holders to create “make-do” pincushions.

  22. Michele Smith :

It’s funny you ask that because I am constantly fishing containers out of the trash for recycling. At the moment, I have a gum container, vitamin bottle and toilet tissue holder! I will find something creative to do with them!!! Awesome prize package ~ Have a great day everyone

I reuse so many different things. Be it jewelry pieces, glass pieces or scraps of material they all come in handy in one variety or another when it comes to crafting. I sculpt fairies do crafts with my grand children, sew, etch glass and make glass beads. If there is some thing I see and I like it or just think it’s cool, I will make.

I love to reuse clear plastic packaging. It can be die cut, embossed, colored with alcohol inks and more. You can get beautiful effects from something that is usually thrown away.

Most recently, I used cardboard as the backing for a small wallhanging memorial. I covered it with quilt batting, fabric and embellishments.
I have recycled many things over the years. One of my favorites was reusing film canisters (obviously a while back) to make snow “globes” as a craft in my son’s kindergarten class. Once, I upcycled an old chair for my mother. It didn’t have a bottom so I cut up an old plastic crate to make the seat then covered it with recycled foam, fabric and clear vinyl. I have used cardboard and metal coat hangers for numerous projects.

This is my favorite Free Stuff Friday! I love the mystery of the prize and reading all of the answers to get more ideas for recycling into crafts!

I made a very cute mobile for my son using an old CD, a toilet paper tube, and old newspapers. We used an old baby sock to make a hat and scarf for a snowman for a school assignment. From the kids’ school projects that we don’t keep, I save all of the craft bits to reuse later. I also save little bits of ribbon from EVERYTHING in a canister!

What haven’t I. Everything I lay my eyes on is fair game. My favorite craft is cardmaking, so anything paper, or anything that can be used as an embellishment. One thing I have become obsessed with saving is security envelopes. There are an amazing number of designs, even a few different colors. Free, and they make an interesting contrast for collage designs.

The bigger question is – what have I NOT used? I use CDs as ice rinks for snowmen or other creatures, tuna cans for snowmen sleds, pasta pieces for different angels, brown paper/ bags for mache’ items, milk jugs for pattern templates and the list goes on. My family thinks I save EVERYTHING!

I re-use old pill bottles, small jars and small boxes for storing items like beads. Wrapping paper cardboard rolls become templates for napkin rings. Pop cans become templates for bangle bracelets. I save paper that is only printed on one side and use the other side to draw designs or ideas. A worn out pair of jeans is going to get cut up into pieces to use to buff my clay creations.

Two lamps that I got free because the glass shades had broken. For the floor lamp, I found two plastic bowls that fit, sprayed them a metallic grey to match the lamp, now it gives very directed light. For the desk lamp I found a stamped tin openwork bowl with a leaf pattern, sprayed it black to match the lamp and added a 4″ black fringe. Now it has a very 30s tropical-ish feel.

Odds and ends scrap heavy fabric (think upholstery, canvas, denim) make great hand or body warmers when stitched and stuffed with feed corn. Popped in the micro, they provide many soothing minutes when you’re chilled or sore. Great gifts, too!

My daughter started a painting of a leafless tree. I am revamping it to make a full summer tree with flowers.

I had my husband make a frame of old rotted fence slats and a roll of old chicken wire. The frame is approx 4.5ft wide and 24″ tall and the wire is cut and nailed to the back. I use this to display many of the things I collect and make. They look really cute hanging on there. You can even put cup hooks along the bottom to hang cups or other goodies. I love it.

I work with kids and last Spring I did a full week of recycled crafts, without even realizing it at first! I think my favorite was the Capri Sun tote bags. They used old Capri Sun packages that were rinsed and dried, then it was just tape and staples to put them together. They turned out really cute and the kids had a blast!

I save the extra buttons that come with blouses for projects. Also, sometimes some of my young daughters princess accessories come with some “bling” on them. Once the item is no longer wanted, I used the embellishments in some of my projects.

  80. Lynn :

    Date: February 23, 2012 @ 4:11 AM

I make jewelry from bleach bottles. I also make Christmas ornaments from plastic bottles. In making my jewelry I use toilet paper rolls for my own technique. I try to re-purpose everything. My family calls me the Queen of recycle. You can hear around my house —don’t throw it away mom might be able to make something from it— LOL

  81. Ann Winberg :

It is rediculous the things I save just knowing I will find a purpose for them. Bread bag tags made the cutest little clips when my website partner painted characters on them. Cute to put on packages or shoestrings for kids.

  82. Kathy D :

    Date: February 24, 2012 @ 5:43 AM

I’ve used the flat chips of pink brick, from my home when I was a girl, to make Santa face Christmas ornaments. I just painted the red and white hat and white beard and used the brick color for the face. I gave one to everyone in my family.

  83. Laura T. Giddens :

I took a round plastic butter bowl, covered it with a scrap of material and ribbon; cut a hole in the top and used a fake ponytail for her hair. My grand daughter looked like “Gennie” on the “I dream of Gennie” show.
