Gift Bag from a Box

I had one friend who, rather than purchase gift boxes, used to give presents that were wrapped in empty food boxes, which turned out to be much sturdier than regular gift boxes. As much as I love gift bags, they’re flimsy and they either tear, the bottom breaks or the handles rip off. Instead of dealing with them, I used my early inspiration and made one out of an empty food box. It saved me money on a gift bag, allowed me to keep the box from going in recycling, and I know I won’t have to panic worrying that the bag is going to split down the side.

What you’ll need:

Step 1. Cut the flap off the top of the food box.

Step 2. Put a layer of Mod Podge on the front, back and sides of the food box, then wrap it in decorative scrapbook paper. Cover the front and one side side with a sheet of paper, then cover the back and other side with another sheet. Flatten it down by pressing on the outside of the box with one hand while you hold it steady with your other hand as it’s inside the box. You can use a brayer if you have one. Put extra pressure on the edges. Don’t trim the excess off yet.

Step 3. Flip the box over, then use Mod Podge to adhere scrapbook paper on the bottom.

Step 4. Let everything dry thoroughly for a few hours, then trim the excess paper. Use Mod Podge to seal down any edges that are peeling, then allow a couple more hours for it to dry.

Step 5. Put a hand on the top of either side of the box and lightly press the front and back of the box together. Move your hands down, lightly pressing as you go along, until you get halfway down the box. This will indent the sides of the box so it resembles what a gift bag would look like.

Step 6. Make two holes in the box – two in the front and two in the back – for the handle. To make sure they’re even, make one hole, press the top of the front and back of the box together, then use a pencil to trace the hole onto the opposite side of the box. Use a ruler to make sure the holes on the same side of the box are evenly across from each other.

Step 7. Cut two longer pieces of ribbon, then make a thick knot at the end of each one. Put one end of the ribbon through one hole so the knot is on the inside and can’t fit through, then guide it through the other hole so you can tie another knot on the inside. Do the same for the other handle, but make sure both handles are the same size on either side.
