Puzzling Blocks!

Once upon a time, when I led a much more exciting life than I do nowadays (it’s still great, just not quite as exciting!) My husband and two-year-old son took me to Paris for Mother’s Day. I know, major points for them! In those days we were the masters of childhood distraction and I was always on the lookout for great, small toys that could distract a busy toddler on our travels. That weekend, walking along the ile de citie, we stumbled into a small toy store hoping to find something that would keep our son busy while we toured nearby Notre Dame. The store was a marvelous jumble of exotic looking toys and we were instantly fascinated. We could have walked away with bags and bags of fabulous toys, but with limited funds we left with only a small box containing a set of puzzle blocks with six different pictures.

Our son literally spent hours with that puzzle. Not only building the puzzles correctly but also making an infinite combination of odd- looking animals, a lion with a monkey tail, a giraffe with elephant feet. It was one of the best purchases we ever made. And ever since I’ve kept an eye out for similar puzzles to add to our toy repertoire.

The boy has pretty much outgrown the old puzzle blocks, but his little sister is as fascinated as he was which started me thinking, how hard could it be to make a set of puzzle blocks?

As it turns out, not very hard. Here’s what you need:

  • 4 or 9 wooden blocks – you could reuse old alphabet blocks or purchase plain wooden blocks
  • Six images big enough to cover all your blocks when they are pushed together in a square. I used pages out of High Five and Highlights, but copies of family photos would be another great idea
  • Mod Podge
  • Paintbrush
  • Scissors or paper trimmer

The only trick with this project is that you need to be fairly precise with cutting, so it helps if you have a paper trimmer to make things easier.

First, cut the image down to roughly the size you’ll need, leaving at least a half-inch all around. Position your blocks on the reverse side of the paper and trace carefully all around the big square, then around each of the individual blocks. Trim the paper along the lines, checking as you go to make sure the squares line up on the blocks.

Once you have all your images cut out, it’s time to glue. Be sure that you only have one square for each puzzle per block (it’s easier if you separate the squares by picture and just take one per puzzle per block from each pile). Brush a thin coat of Modge Podge onto the surface of the block and smooth one of the squares over the top, being sure to line the edges up. Working in stages, cover each block with the six puzzle images until every square has been used up. When all your squares are covered and dry, apply a second coat of Modge Podge over the top to seal the images on. Depending on the thickness of the paper, you may want to add a third layer as well.

The variations on this are pretty much endless. And once you have one set done you can change out pictures as your child’s interest wane by gluing new squares over the top of old or damaged ones. Use family pictures, images from wildlife magazines or even drawings that your child has made for these fun little puzzles.

Contests, CreateForLess Team 2 Comments

It’s Monday morning, and time to announce the winners of last week’s Free Stuff Friday! Our question last week was: What is your favorite holiday and why?

People answered to enter to win the “Page Accents in Deep Primary”. The package contains 502 pieces of 12 x 12 page accents in primary colors. Includes 30 large borders, 52 large frames & tags, 420 borders, frames, tags, corners, shapes and page markers. All pages are reversible, revealing two colors per shape.

The winning answers were:

Debi – I think my favorite holiday is Thanksgiving. This is the best time for all of my family to get together without the stress of having to buy presents. The only stress of Thanksgiving is figuring out when to stop eating! Lol

Kim – My favorite holiday is always the one we happen to be celebrating. It takes me a few days to switch gears once the holiday is over- for example, I really like the warm fall colors of Thanksgiving and could enjoy them for another week or so, but once I get my Christmas decorations out, I will be ready for red and green and white and gold and silver. The hardest transition for me is always when Christmas is over.

Don’t forget to check back for Free Stuff Friday!

Happy Birthday to Me!

Crafts, Scrapbooking 3 Comments

By Crafts-a lot Contributor, Mable who is an avid reader of craft blogs & magazines and has aspirations to improve her crafting skills.

I have this growing pile of pictures on my crafting table that I want to add to my scrapbook album. I’ve recently gotten back into scrapbooking and I have a lot of catching up to do! I took an unintentional hiatus from scrapbooking; it’s been over three years. It’s hard to keep up with crafting when you love them all!

Since my last scrapbooking session I finished college, moved to a big city, changed jobs, my parents both celebrated milestone birtdays and their 30th wedding anniversary.  I was also in my cousin’s wedding, went to a family reunion and went on a few camping trips and beach vacations.

While I was getting supplies for my scrapbook I realized a reoccurring theme of events: Birthdays, celebrations, travel, and hobbies. Holidays and birthdays come around the same time every year, so I figured I should pick out enough to last at least this year (plus my stack of photos…)

Since I used up all my supplies during my last scrapbooking session, I got to pick out new stuff! I first picked out the Autumn Leaves 6 Minute Birthday Scrapbook Kit.

The kit contained 6 patterned pages, 20 mega stickers, 10 chipboard stickers, 5 ribbon pieces, 6 journaling panels, 35 alphabet stickers and a design idea booklet.

I also needed to get more scrapbooking adhesives. I used a glue pen to glue down the photos. It’s the first time I have used one and it works well and very easy to use without any mess or sticky fingers. I usually use double-sided tape or foam adhesives.

Birthday Scrapbook Kit Contents

What I especially liked about this kit, is once the stickers were stuck on; they were re-positional, not permanently stuck right away. Even the large photo borders. The cupcake graphics were very cute.

I also liked that everything had a sticky back, the ribbons, the borders, the fun stickers and the journaling chipboards. I loved the crown as one of the stickers as well. How perfect for a little birthday princess!

Unfortunately two of the three ribbons had been cut at odd angles. I had to cut them down to make it straight and lost some inches of my ribbon.

The paper was fun as were all of the decorations. I liked that the backgrounds were versatile and didn’t necessarily all need to be used as birthday layouts. They were fun and cheery without being overly cheesy.

My favorite layout I created wasn’t even one I used for a birthday page, it’s the “Pool Time” layout. I liked the large half circle base page with a multi-color print in it. The base brown also had a subtle design to it.

Turkey Day Tablecloth

Crafts, Holidays, Home Decor No Comments

By Kid’s Craft Contributor, Gillian from the blog “Dried Figs and Wooden Spools”.

Now that winter is just around the corner, the fall leaves are pretty much a thing of the past in my town. But with Thanksgiving still waiting in the wings, fall decorations, especially those that can do double duty as Turkey Day decor, are still a welcome distraction from the cold outside. So here’s an easy (if a little time consuming) project that can keep you AND the kids busy one rainy afternoon, and bonus! It’ll be a great addition to your Thanksgiving table. The secret to creating a beautiful tablecloth that even your toddlers can help out with is Freezer paper.

Freezer paper is coated on one side with plastic, which can be ironed onto almost any fabric. Unlike wax paper, it does not leave a residue when pulled away, making it an ideal material for stenciling.

Since I waited until the leaves were gone before I got busy, I had to gather images online of the leaves I wanted. If you are lucky enough to live in a climate where the leaves are still at their best, you can simply gather a few likely specimens for this project.

Trace the leaves onto pieces of freezer paper, leaving ample space around each.

Carefully cut out each leaf, being sure to pay attention to the details on the leaf, the more accurate the cut, the more realistic the finished project will be. Older kids can help out with simpler shaped leaves.

Using either a store bought tablecloth, runner or fabric, cut and hem to the desired length (heavy fabrics such as twill and denim work best, but nothing with a texture), lay out the stencils until you like the look of the pattern. Then using a hot, dry iron, press each piece of freezer paper onto the fabric, double check points and sharp turns to make sure the paper adheres completely to the fabric.

Now, let your kids get to work with the paint, choosing bold, fall colors. If you are planning on using the tablecloth over a number of weeks, choose a heat set fabric paint and set according to the directions, craft paint can be used for a more short-lived decoration.

Once the paint dries, carefully pull the paper away and enjoy your work!

Matching napkins would be a snap using the same technique. And once the freezer paper stencil bug bites you, you’ll be amazed at how many projects spring to mind!

Winner of Free Stuff Friday!

Contests, CreateForLess Team, Free Stuff Friday!! No Comments

Every Friday we will post a giveaway on Think Crafts. All you have to do is comment on Friday’s blog post answering the question of the week! New prizes every week!

Last week our prize was the  ”Designing with Fabric: Imaginative Ways to Incorporate Fabric into Your Scrapbooking & Paper Arts Projects” by Autumn Leaves. Design books are a great resource for ideas and inspiration. This book is a collaboration of fifteen designers and how they use fabric in their scrapbooking projects. The entire book is dedicated to showing different ideas of using fabric, ribbon, trim and buttons into your memory projects. The photos in this book are beautiful! A must-have for paper crafters.

Last week’s question: What is your favorite handmade gift idea?

The winning answer:

My favorite homemade gift is quilts made just for the person receiving them. Sometimes I make mini-quilts that are great as wallhangings, others are full size for a wrap or on a bed. Each gets a personalized tag as well. Design a simple label on the computer, reverse print it on very thin paper, then glue it upside-down on a small piece of muslin. When dry carefully rub off the paper to expose the label and seal it with a permanent fabric glue and also glue it to a corner of the quilt.
